Look at these cute clips about dinosaurs. You can learn a lot of facts. What is your favourite dinosaur?

Here is a cute video to watch.
Our focus over the next couple of weeks is Animals.

Weather
This week we are typing out stories on the computer about lightning. Here is some footage to help us think of good words for our story.

Water Cycle
We conducted a little experiment today.
Before morning tea we made a little puddle of water and then traced around the outline.
Questions were asked about what might happen to the water and there were a lot of predictions.
At lunch we checked it again and as if by magic the water had gone.
We then watched the youtube video and listened to the song below.
Eva had best guess. She said the water went up to sky and made clouds.

Blob Creatures
We then began our blob creatures, putting this colour mixing information we have learnt to the test.
Next step is add detail using sharpies.

Today we looked at the changes that occur when you mix the primary colours.
I placed the colours into a plastic bag and the students had to squish it around to combine the colours.
Can your child tell you the Maori colours?

Red and blue make purple

Red and yellow makes orange.

Yellow and blue make green.

This week we will be looking at colour changes.
We will be able to identify the primary colours and the secondary colours that can be made with these.
Check out this video.

Our Weekly update of changes
The hyacinths are starting to bloom The purple one has more flowers and Tipene had a sniff and said it smells. The flowers are starting to show on the white bulb and the flowers look greenish.

Our little crocus bulb looks like it has two shoots coming out and there are little straight roots growing down into the water.

Welcome back to term 2. Great to see so many students eager to get back to school and be ready for learning. Checking our Nature Table we can see...

The red hyacinth bulb now has a purple flower poking out. The white bulb has a thicker shoot but no flower. Both have really long roots that look like spaghetti tangled up.

Mrs Geary bought some new bulbs. They are called crocuses  They are tiny and the glass jar is tiny too. We have a problem one of  the bulbs is so small it drops down the hole! What can we do?

One of Jamies vegetable shoots died over the holidays because no one was here to water it. Mrs Geary watered it half way through the holidays and Jamie watered it today. I hope they all haven't died.

We tested out the larger sprouts on Friday. Some students were brave and tried some and really enjoyed them.

We had a discussion this morning about the Blood Moon and I was impressed with how many students saw it. Lots of students wrote about it today. This is a photo I took with the I pad, it not that great.

Yesterday our last butterfly emerged from the chrysalis. Today Mrs Geary released it. We were a bit concerned where it was going to go because it was raining. Where do butterflies go when it rains?

Great to see the students bringing interesting things they have found. Today Oliver brought a butterflies wing and Jamie found a ladybird. I'm also impressed with those students who have answered some of our Wondering Wednesday questions. We are learning a lot.

While we were outside we checked out the orchard. It was too wet to have a look on Enviro Day. We discussed what types of trees were in there. This is a quiet chilling out spot where children can sit down and talk or take a book to read. Surprise, surprise we found Easter eggs hidden all over the orchard we were tempted but we left them.

This afternoon we became explorers and went out to see how many autumn leaves we could find. We challenged ourselves to find different coloured leaves. There were heaps of brown ones so we had to keep our eagle eyes out for the really beautiful ones. Here are some of the leaves we found.
These leaves all come from deciduous trees, trees that loose their leaves in Autumn. Trees that stay green all year round are called ever green trees.

Update on the 14.4.14
One of Jamie's vegetable seeds has come up.

Over the weekend the last chrysalis has turned really black.

The red bulb"s shoot is taller and thicker and the roots in both are longer and tangled
.
Mrs Geary has brought a new sprout mix.We hope it will be ready by Thursday.

The students took the beany bags home to plant on Friday. Dylan put his broad beans in a black pot. Ella planted them in her garden. Other students got beans and they planted them.

Beany Bags
I sent home the Broad Bean Bags today because they were getting too big and some were going moldy. I would like updates on how the beans are growing in the garden. For those students who missed out on the bags I gave them 3 beans to plant. I wonder if any are magic?

I

It only took a week for our sprouts to be ready, it must be this warm weather. We had a taste test. Great to see so many children being brave and trying something new. They were a bit spicy because there was radish seeds in the mix.
Look what you are eating, roots and shoots.

Monday 7th April
Changes we can see this morning...
A lot of the chrysalis have opened up and become butterflies. On Friday a butterfly left the room following Dylan out. This morning we have two butterflies in the classroom.

Kaden alerted us this morning to the butterfly coming out of the chrysalis and we were able to take a video of it plopping out.

At lunchtime Mrs Geary took one of the butterflies outside.

Looking at the hyacinth bulbs this morning the shoot is getting thicker and taller.
Can you see the chrysalis hanging from the pine cone?

There has been some changes with Jamie's vegetable seeds two seeds have started to sprout. They are very small and hard to see.

Beany Bags
The roots have grown bigger and and little root have grown on the side. The shoots are heaps taller and there are leaves at the top and now on the side of the shoot.

Our bulbs have also changed. The shoots are getting bigger and taller. The red bulbs roots are touching the bottom of the jar.

No change with Jamie's vegetable seeds. May be its all happening under the soil.

Look at the middle bean. Its root is white and growing down and the green shoot is growing up. We think there is a leaf curled up tight at the end.

We think these beans have been planted pointing down.

Today we can see roots and shoots coming out of our broad beans. The roots are growing down and the shoots are growing up. We can see a curled up leaf at the top of the shoot. Some of the beans were put in the bags upside down. So the root and shoot is going down. We wonder if the shoot will go up.
We passed around some beans with roots and shoots and one got broken. We have to touch them carefully.

Beany Bag Update

Jamie has added to our Nature Table today. He brought some cauliflower and broccoli seeds planted in a little container. His mum wrote little tags so we know which is which. We need to make sure we keep them watered and in a warm, sunny place so they can grow.

Beany Bags
This morning we were amazed to see roots growing out of our broad beans.
 Gosh, that didn't take long!

There has been a dramatic change with our hyacinth bulbs this week.
. Look at the roots they have got heaps longer and the shoots are pushing up.

Wow!
Look how beautiful the butterfly is.

This butterfly came from the microphone. It had to be moved to a safe place so its wings could expand or get bigger.

Its all go in Room G today. We watched as two butterflies burst their way out of their chrysalis. Mrs Geary had to set them free this afternoon. We watched as they pumped liquid into their wings to make them bigger.

Butterflies

Broad Beans
Today we planted some beany bags so we can watch the changes a seed makes.
Beans are seeds that are full of food that a plant needs to start growing. When they are given water, air and warmth they will start to germinate, or grow.
We will be watching our beany bags and reporting on the changes we see.
Come and check them out in class. They are hanging on a line.

The chrysalis on the microphone is turning black and if you look carefully you can see the orange wings.
One of the butterflies from the curtain. The old chrysalis looks like a piece of plastic.

The two caterpillars above the Rainbow Buddies.

Beginning of Week 8
Today we have seen lots of changes here are a list of them.
  1. Two chrysalis have turned black.
  2. We have some new chrysalis one above the rainbow buddies, one on the pine cone and one on the plant.
  3. Some of the chrysalis are turning black and you can see the butterfly wings
  4. Two  chrysalis have opened . Mrs Geary found one butterfly and put it outside. We need to look for the other one. Wow! Just found it up on the top window.
  5. There is only one caterpillar left on the swan plant.
  6. The  roots on on the hyacinths have grown really long and the shoot is longer on the red bulb.
  7. At lunchtime the last chrysalis on the curtain cracked open and a butterfly came out.

We have a problem we cant reach them to set them free. They are trying to escape but the window is in the way.

This is a picture of our hyacinths Week 7

A collection of seed we have found. helicopters, grass seed and seeds from brown bread.

A cheeky caterpillar has made a chrysalis on our reading task board.
I'll start putting the pictures of things that change on this page instead of the home page because this is really where they need to go.
