Parts of Speech

Parts of Speech.

This week we are learning about Verbs. Verbs are action words.
Get your child to do some actions by giving them some action words. They will be able to think up some by themselves.
For example: skip, clap, jump and run.

When you have watched this video. Look around your house and describe things you see.
You could describe it's size, shape, look and the way it feels.

The last two weeks we have been learning about plural nouns.
We thought of some words that don't follow this rule, these are...
people
sheep
mouse
deer
Can you think of any more?

Nouns are naming words.
A noun is a word that names a person, place or thing.
There are two types of nouns

Proper Nouns: The name of a person place or thing. eg

  • your name
  • the name of the place where you live
  • names of days of the week and months

Proper nouns always begin with a capital letter.

Common Nouns:  A general name for a person, place or thing.

  • boy
  • town
  • dog
  • table
  • pencil
Common nouns don't need a capital letter unless they are at the beginning of a sentence.

Activity
At home get the students to point to things around the house and get them to tell you their names.

Here is a song to help learn about the parts of speech. We will be working through these over the year.
